Week 1 Meeting Recap
We had our first STF meeting of the 2022-2023 year on Tuesday, and it was so wonderful to see so many new and old faces as we introduced our club, got to know each other, and talked about our goals for the year.
She’s the First is a non-profit organization that finds, funds, and supports solutions that not only educate and empower girls but also build up the communities where they are able to flourish.
UCLA’s chapter typically raises about $1,500 a year to help women around the world defeat obstacles by working with schools to support community-based solutions to educational inequity.
Obstacles often faced by girls trying to achieve an education in low-income countries:
Poverty
emphasis on early marriage and traditional roles
long, dangerous routes to school
higher costs at higher levels of schooling
But with an education, a girl can:
earn up to 20% more as an adult with each additional year of schooling
be less likely to marry early & more likely to be in a healthy relationship
have fewer, healthier children
We LOVE fundraising for educational equity, but we do more, too!
We are dedicated to building a community for our members. We love holding socials and we have a Big/Little mentorship program.
Previous socials include: picnic on Janss, game nights at board members’ apartments, and Bridgerton discussions (our fav lol)
We also do local outreach programs, and hope to hold drives for a local women’s shelter this quarter.

After a few fun icebreaker and get-to-know you games, we went over our clubs goals for the year:
Visibility
Increase campus visibility so that more people know about and can contribute to our mission
Fundraising
Raise as much money as possible to send as many scholarships as we can to girls around the world
Community
Create an even stronger sense of community within the club!

While we do not have an application to be accepted into the club, we do want to have members register as club members for organizational purposes. Part of the registration are $5 quarterly dues. These dues go towards food and other expenses for club socials, meetings, etc., so the dues ultimately go right back to you! If dues form a financial burden for you, please reach out to us and we will work something out.
